About Us

Welcome to Lyngard Lighting, where heritage craftsmanship meets modern design.

Carmen's Journey: From Ceramics to Lighting Design

During her teenage years, Carmen immersed herself in the family business, working in her father’s ceramic restoration studio in the renowned ceramic city of Stoke-on-Trent. These formative years ignited her enduring passion for antique ceramics. It was in this vibrant environment that Carmen honed her skills in miniature sculpting, learning the intricate techniques required to restore delicate ceramics. This hands-on experience not only deepened her appreciation for craftsmanship but also provided her with a profound understanding of the historical finishes and materials used in the past.

Academic Pursuits and Career Evolution

Despite her deep-seated passion for ceramics, Carmen chose to pursue a different path. She enrolled at Manchester University, where she earned a BA(Hons) in Fashion and Textiles. This academic foundation paved the way for her career as a womenswear fashion buyer in London. In this role, Carmen was responsible for developing and strategizing fashion ranges, traveling extensively to collaborate with factories and predict emerging trends from around the globe.

A Personal Journey

Carmen's career in fashion introduced her to Iain, a merchandiser working in branded fashion, he would later become her husband. Together, they welcomed two wonderful boys into their lives. After several years in the fast-paced world of fashion, Carmen decided to take a career break to focus on her family. It was during this precious time that her passion for ceramics was rekindled, leading her to restore and sell antique pieces.

From Local Antique Fairs to Global Fairs

Carmen's dedication to her craft quickly gained recognition within her community. She began exhibiting at local antique fairs, and her success soon led her to prestigious high-end events, including London Olympia, Dallas, Baltimore, and ultimately the esteemed New York Ceramics Fair. It was at this pivotal event that Carmen had a transformative realization: instead of merely sourcing precious antique pieces, she possessed the knowledge and skills to create her own.

The Birth of Lyngard Lighting

With this newfound inspiration, Carmen embarked on an ambitious journey to craft unique ceramic lighting pieces. The hard work began in 2012, and after two years of dedication and preparation, Carmen and Iain were ready to launch Lyngard Lighting in 2014. Today, Lyngard Lighting stands as a testament to Carmen’s passion, creativity, and commitment to exquisite craftsmanship, blending her rich heritage in ceramics with contemporary design.

Our Story

Lyngard Lighting was co-founded by Carmen Lyngard and Iain Pattinson in 2014. Carmen, a descendant of a long line of ceramic artists and potters dating back to 1829, brings a rich legacy of expertise and artistry to every piece we create. This deep-rooted heritage is the foundation of Lyngard Lighting, inspiring us to blend traditional techniques with contemporary design.

Our Craftsmanship

We pride ourselves on producing ceiling lights, wall lights, and bathroom lights of unparalleled quality. Our commitment to excellence begins with our choice of materials; each piece is made from superior Fine Bone China and made with solid brass fittings for longevity. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also provides exceptional strength and durability, ensuring that our lights are as enduring as they are beautiful.

Unique Techniques

Inspired by the past, we employ decorative techniques that are uniquely ours. Carmen Lyngard meticulously designs and hand sculpts each prototype in plaster, from which molds are made. This process ensures that every detail is perfect before production begins. Together with Iain Pattinson, they oversee the entire manufacturing process in our factory in Stoke-on-Trent, a city renowned for its rich pottery tradition.

One of our most distinctive techniques is true reduction fired lustres, a specialist method known by only a handful of experts worldwide. This process, which uses hydrogen, creates a shimmering iridescent glaze whose color can change depending on the light in the room. Metallic elements are added during firing, giving each piece its unique charm. No two pieces are exactly the same, adding to the unique beauty and universal appeal of our designs.

Our Vision

At Lyngard Lighting, we believe that lighting is more than just a functional element; it is an integral part of your home’s ambiance and character. Our designs are not merely fixtures but statements of style and elegance, each telling a story that bridges the past and the present. We take pride in our ability to create pieces that not only illuminate your space but also add a touch of heritage and sophistication.
